The North Unit Irrigation Project, conceived before World War One but not opened until 1946, is one of the largest in the Northwest. It was one of the last such projects to be completed. North Unit seed crops are famous around the world.

Annual Board Meeting, Elections and Ice Cream Social

The Historical Society’s Annual Meeting/Board Elections/Ice Cream Social, usually held in late June, was re-scheduled this year because of the Madras and Culver Centennials; it will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 pm, in the Madras Senior Center (860 SW Madison St.)  The program for this year’s event features the winner of the Historical Society’s Grand Prize for best entry in the 2010 “History Day “ Competition, Jordan Gemelas of Madras High School, presenting his winning video on the history of the Re-regulating Dam on the Deschutes. We guarantee that you are going to enjoy (and learn from) Jordan’s outstanding presentation; and of course there will be ample opportunity to visit with friends and catch up on the doing of your Historical Society!  Join us Sept. 19, and bring family and friends.

Centennial Celebrations

By all accounts, the main Centennial events of Madras and Culver(July 3-4 and Aug. 14, respectively), were great successes, and the Historical Society did its part in each celebration to make sure that our local history was well served. For the Madras celebration, the Society offered an elaborate “Heritage Tent,” with historic photos and artifacts  of old Madras, demonstrations of spinning and weaving and Native American basketry, and display of two quilts especially created for the Centennial.  We also sponsored a series of four skits based on Madras history, featuring “The Madras Players,”  Walt Ponsford (former County Commisioner), Mike Ahern (current Commissioner), Mike Morgan (Madras City Administrator), Royce Embanks (Madras City Councilman), Rev. Janet Farrell, Bill Houts, Reba Powell, Judy Simmons, and Jerry and Dorothy Ramsey.  An estimated 5000 visitors came to Sahalee Park for the festivities, many returning home from as far away as Cape Cod!

Re-Live the 1911 Welcome Ceremonies

The final program in the Madras Centennial Year will be on Sat., Feb. 19: a celebration of the Centennial of the Coming of the Railroad to Madras (and Central Oregon). Plans are for a re-enactment of the original “Welcome Ceremonies” at the actual 1911 site just west of Madras, featuring a reconstruction of the original “Madras the Gateway to Central Oregon” arch, period music, re-enacted speeches, and some historical surprises; and then a lunch and reception “down the line” at the historic Oregon Trunk Depot in Metolius. Look for further details on this event here and in the Pioneer, and plan on bundling up and joining us for the fun of re-living a major historical moment!

A  Photographic Portfolio  by Beth Crow and Jerry Ramsey

In keeping with the Railroad Centennial, a photographic portfolio  by Beth Crow and Jerry Ramsey on the life and railroad era photography of Ole Hedlund will appear early in September in The Oregon Historical Quarterly. Hedlund, a Swedish immigrant, lived in Madras 1909-1912 and took well more than a thousand photographs of every phase of the building of the Oregon Trunk railroad to Madras and on to Bend, and also many historically valuable photos of Madras street scenes, dryland farming operations, Warm Springs Indians, and so on. Work on what has become “The Hedlund Project” was begun in 2005 by Beth Crow, who discovered his personal history, and began to gather what now is the largest known  collection of Ole Hedlund photographs. Crow and Ramsey hope to mount a second exhibit of his photos in Madras later this Fall.
